Lidar is a powerful tool for robot vacuums to map their environments, along with cameras and 3D-mapping sensors that offer an elite level of obstacle-avoiding. However, some prefer to stick by using a basic vacuum that is cheap.

1. Neato Botvac D4

This Neato is a great choice if you want to take advantage of the convenience of a robot vacuum cleaner, but not sacrifice too much in terms of performance. The D4 offers an excellent mapping and navigation feature and smart home integration and an easy-to-use application and all at a price point that won't cost you a fortune.

To set up this bot, you must plug it into its base and connect it to your Wi-Fi network at home. The Neato app will guide you through the initial configuration (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi and naming it the D4 etc.). Once it's fully charged, you can then begin an uncleaning cycle.

Once the D4 is up and running the app lets you set up a schedule automatically or manually at any point. You can also use your voice to control it through Google Home or Amazon Alexa. And if you have an Apple Watch, you can even start a cleaning session with a simple tap on the wrist.

This model was a success in our tests on both hard and carpeted flooring, accumulating 91.3% combined of debris in serpentine pathways. It's not quite as good at cleaning edges and corners as the more expensive models. The side sensors of the D4 keep it around 1.5 inches from walls. It also lacks the side-sweeping brush that is found on all, if not the cheapest robotic cleaners. The turret's elevated design means that it cannot be placed under furniture with low clearance. It does, however, support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw lines on your floor plan to tell the D4 not to travel there. The battery life of 75 minutes is also average. But that's a small trade-off for the ease of use this model provides.

2. Roomba iRobot 990 from iRobot

The Roomba 980 from IRobot is the flagship robot in the company's lineup, promising premium performance and a host of connected features. The 980 is priced at $899/PS899, though it's often cheaper if you shop online (John Lewis or Amazon US are both great places to begin).

The 980 has the most advanced cleaning system of any of our top picks, including a HEPA filter that can capture microscopic dust and allergens for better air quality in your home. It also supports a range of flooring options such as tile and hardwood.

The Roomba can also return to its base station automatically after it's done cleaning, ensuring that it is always ready for the next adventure. This feature is exclusive to the 980 and makes the robot more user-friendly.

3. iRobot Roomba 985

iRobot Roomba 985 is designed to help you get your floors clean and attractive, thanks to its powerful cleaning system, smart navigation, and intelligent integration with other iRobot products. Its exclusive dirt detection system alerts you to areas that require extra attention, and it includes smart sensors to keep it away from stairs and other dangerous obstacles. It can also automatically recharge and keep cleaning until the task has been completed. Its advanced mapping technology and vSLAM allow it to map the entire floor of your home. It also keeps track of which rooms remain to be cleaned and the exact location of it.

Its low-profile allows it to get under furniture, carpets, and other items which is where pet hair and dust are often hidden. It can also remove dirt from edges and corners, unlike other robot vacuums. It's also simple to schedule cleaning sessions from anywhere with the iRobot app or by using your voice with Alexa and Google Assistant.

This is also iRobot’s most powerful vacuum. It can grab the dirt that has deeper particles or more pet hairs unlike other midrange models like the Roomba 960. This is because the cleaner has larger brushes that rotate counter-clockwise and a motor with greater suction power.

The Roomba 995 is iRobot’s least expensive vacuum, with recharge and resume. However it isn't equipped with the auto-empty feature that the I6+ or I7 offer. It's not equipped with iAdapt navigation 2.0 and the camera used by the I7 to locate objects and avoid obstructions. It isn't able to access features such as in-app containment or save maps.

Another issue is that the iRobot 995 doesn't include mopping capabilities. Although this might not be an issue if you only want a top-notch vacuum with lidar, it's a big disadvantage for anyone looking to purchase a hybrid robot vacuum lidar.

The other iRobot that has automatic-empty is the Combo J7+, which can mop and vacuum. It has the same navigation as the I6+ and I7 but it doesn't come with iAdapt 2.0 and cameras. It can't save any maps and doesn't offer the same features for in-app containment like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however, have improved automation through iRobot Genius and can learn your habits for cleaning and automate cleaning schedules. It also has a larger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 which can hold 2.5 liters of debris which is more than enough to last 60 days.

iRobot Roomba 960

The 960 is a less costly alternative to the 980. It delivers similar performance however, in a smaller package. It's still excellent on bare floors and carpeted rooms, picking up food crumbs, tracked-in dirt and pieces of torn paper with ease. It's also adept in navigating around obstacles and avoiding them. It is capable of removing dirt embedded in the soil.

This robot utilizes iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its position. This allows it to move around the area efficiently and avoid being trapped. The top-mounted camera and SLAM work together to allow it to observe the floor and its objects, allowing it to effortlessly avoid furniture legs and other obstacles. It also has an angled profile that allows it to get under tables and couches. And it's able to return to its dock to recharge when necessary.

While it lacks some advanced features, like map-saving and selective room cleaning, the 960's navigation is superior to most other robots. And it offers a larger dirt bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home application for iOS or Android allows you to control the 960. It comes with a range of automation features that include the ability to create cleaning preferences, a schedule, trigger spot cleans and check the battery's status. You can also track the vacuum's location, and receive notifications if its dirt container is full. The 960 also supports voice commands using Alexa and Google Assistant. The iRobot Roomba 960 is an excellent choice for the majority of households. It's well-constructed, incurs fewer recurring costs and has a bigger dirt compartment, and is faster than the less expensive RoboVac 11. If you're looking for a cheaper option that performs similarly on floors with carpets and other flooring The Neato Botvac is a good choice.
