About Toto

Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The group's name was derived from the Latin word that means "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every musical style.

The third album from Toto, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make Toto a household name across the world.

After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It is a departure from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and also includes some heavy rock. This album was their first to be certified platinum in North America.

During the recording process for the fifth album, the group loses its manager and faces financial challenges. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with a different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, takes over Fergie Frederiksen as the lead vocalist. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begins an extensive tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Toto is a rock band from America who achieved their greatest success in the 1980s. Founded by seasoned session musicians The band has sold over 40 million albums around the world.

Toto was the first album released by the band in 1978. The album was a huge hit and catapulted toto into international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen albums that have all been hits.

In 1984, Toto wrote their first and, to this day only, movie score for the film Dune. It was a massive project that required the entire group to be involved. Kingdom of Desire was another hit album. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen from Le Roux. The band continued their journey with their fifth studio album, Isolation. The album featured a number of songs, including "Stranger in Town".

After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on absence. This gave the individual members of the group the opportunity to pursue their own projects. In 1996, the group reformed to tour and make an album. It was the first time the original members took to the stage together for over 10 years.

The following year, Toto toured with Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members appeared performing at the same time. After that, the group disbanded once again. Toto reunited for the benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time all the original Toto members appeared on stage together in over 31 years. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Toto has been one of the most popular rock bands for over three decades, scoring huge hits like "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." With a variety of influences, ranging from progressive rock to world rhythms to jazz and soul The group continues to please their fans with their acoustic arena rock.

The band was hit with several setbacks throughout their final years, despite their acclaim. In 2002 keyboardist David Paich and drummer Greg Phillinganes were forced to take a medical leave of absence. Drummer Shem von Schroeck stepped in however the group was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, a string of lineup changes as well as a series of disappointing releases prompted Toto to break up for a period of time. The group returned to the road in 2012 following the release of the album 40 Trips Around The Sun.

The album was a return to their best form, and the tour that came with it was a sold-out event in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion was bolstered by the inclusion of guitarist Steve Lukather and bassist Shem von Schroeck, who had both joined the group.

Toto's music is just as relevant now as it was in the 1970s and 1980s, gaining new fans with each generation. Their success has made them a long-lasting part of pop culture and their live shows are always filled with energy and excitement.
