Saab cars that were built prior to 1994 have an immobilizer system made up of coded keys. Adding an extra key requires a new transponder and special programming. This is usually handled by the dealer using the Tech2 diagnostic tool.

Transponder key

The transponder key is a piece of hardware equipped with an electronic chip. It sends a signal to car when it is inserted into ignition. The car then analyzes the signal to determine whether it is identical to the one that is in the key. If both signals match the car will be able to unlock itself and start.
