3 Wheel Double Buggy

Our tester Claire was impressed by the clean packaging that was easy to open and deemed it to be one of the fastest and easiest pieces of baby gear to put together. She tested it on some rough terrain and was impressed by its performance.

Seats

Most 3 wheel double buggies begin life as single pushchairs, but some can be converted to take an additional seat or carrycot by converting adapters (these are typically more common in tandem buggies). Some models allow you to add an additional board for older children who are ready to walk but require assistance.

For a lightweight alternative that's ideal for city streets, check out the Joie Evalite Duo. It is easy to maneuver and has an enormous basket that has plenty of storage. It can accommodate twins from birth and will accept two car seats or an infant carrycot and seat. The seats have to face towards the front and there is no space to store a shopping bag under the seat. You will require an additional side bag.

If you're looking to go off-road then the Mountain Buggy Duet is a good choice. It is a side by side with the slimmest footprint of any double buggy available. It's easier to maneuver through narrow doors, on public transport and to climb up and over kerbs. It also has a handbrake on the handlebar that can be adjusted for more security and safety.

Another lightweight choice is the UPPAbaby Vista 2 Double that can be used to accommodate twins or a baby and toddler. The seats are multi-positional reclining with UPF 50+ sunshades. The canopy can be adjusted so that the sun does not get into your child's eyes. The Vista 2 can be converted into triple by adding UPPAbaby's "PiggyBack" board for older children.

The iCandy Orange double buggies are one of the most popular on the market. This is due to their superb comfort. It's a true all-terrain pushchair with a soft suspension to make easy work of bumpy surfaces. It can accommodate a massive 30 seating configurations and comes with an integrated ride-on board that can be used for older children who prefer walking, plus a 'cinema seating' mode that raises the back seat to improve visibility.

Alternatively, the phil&teds dot is a fantastic single buggy that is available from day one that is able to easily be adapted to take 2 (or 3!) Different configurations are possible. This is particularly helpful if you have an infant in a car seat as the frame can be fitted with a wedgie that allows for optimal position, and also car seat adapters for a wider range of brands.

Suspension

The quality of the suspension on a 3 wheel double buggy is essential to how it will be easy for you and your baby/s to push. A smooth ride is vital because babies feel every bump on the road, especially if it's on rough terrain such as grass or unpaved paths. Some models have front tires that lock to aid in maneuvering and navigating obstacles like curbs.

Certain models come with air-filled tyres that are great for all-terrain riding, but they can be prone punctures. Be sure to keep an extra set of tyres in the trunk. Other models use gel or foam tyres, which are designed to withstand bumps and are less susceptible to punctures, however, you might find them a little stiff and uncomfortable for your child's back when you choose to jog.

Folding

A three-wheel double buggy could be folded in a neat manner for storage. There are options that fold flat and then stand up (as when they were in a pushchair) and also ones that pop out to reveal a more umbrella-style fold, with the option of a brake operated by hand. In general the more wheels a buggy has the more able it will be to handle over rough terrain. This is especially relevant if the wheels are larger than average - this will give you more stability and decrease the likelihood that your children are likely to tip over or fall over.

The phil&teds sports is an alternative option. It is a future-proof model as it's a fantastic buggy, and can be modified to take two (or three!) within its compact footprint. It has an innovative three-wheel design that includes a sling for better manoeuvrability and stability.

Storage

Its clever frame expands to accommodate an extra seat, but still weighs only 11kg. This makes it simple to lift and maneuver. It can be used with a car seat, carrycot or both. This lets you get the best of all worlds.
