Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked an reversion to the classic sextet format of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate, and less derivative than on previous performances.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. A new studio album was released a few months later, and the band embarked on a long-distance tour in support of the album. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old demo tapes and tapes to make a new record featuring songs that had never been recorded before. By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
