Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a traditional sextet style and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. Its edgier sound reflected the maturation of the group, with drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to earlier efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live concert in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after, and went on a world tour to promote it. During this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that had never been recorded prior to. It was completed as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history not to include any single song that had the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
