Keyless Entry

In addition to unlocking and opening the doors of your car, some key fobs can also be used to start the engine. This is helpful if the vehicle has to be left on a hot day, or when the trunk is stuffed with heavy items that make it difficult to manually open the door. To start the car with your key fob, press the unlock button on it several times in quick intervals. The door locks should unlock and the red LED light should begin to flash. Some key fobs have a separate remote engine start button (for example Ford's key fob sports a circular arrow going clockwise) which you must press to start the car remotely. Mazdas, for instance, require you to first lock the key and then press the Start button.

If you're unable to start your car, you might have a weak or dead battery inside the key fob. The battery inside the key fob isn't powerful enough to send a signal back to the car's system.

If this happens, either replace the batteries or re-program your key fob. This process differs from vehicle to car, but you should usually follow the instructions in your owner's manual. Door Locks
