French-door refrigerators blend form and function. They have stylish double doors that show an enormous fridge on top and a freezer drawer beneath. Special features such as through-the-door dispensers, higher-end ice machines and flex drawers that can be customized make them stand out from the rest.

We consulted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her advice on how to choose the right home. They weighed the capacity of storage as well as layout, energy efficiency, and other factors.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The name implies that GE's Profile series is targeted at consumers who want to incorporate cutting-edge technology in their kitchen. This refrigerator is packed with these, from an inside-the-door Keurig K-cup coffee maker to a sophisticated water dispenser. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This fridge is expensive and I was expecting better.

This fridge is a great option, despite the slight blip. It boasts a spacious freezer compartment, which is quite uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a good amount of frozen food as compared to similar models.

The fridge has 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is the standard for a French-door refrigerator at this price. It has a decent sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. However, it's not the largest one I've seen.

You can alter the shelves in both compartments to create a an individual storage solution. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is also attractive. The LED lighting is a nice touch and the inside storage bins feature an additional shelf that folds down to allow you to store tall items. The drawers include temperature controls that allow you to set them to Meat, Beverage or Deli settings. They're easy to open and close, although I found their textured plastic coatings to be a bit hard on the fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the full suite of features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price, including Wi-Fi and app support through GE's SmartHQ software. The app, which is available for iOS and Android devices allows you to control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and has many options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when doors are left open, when your fridge or freezer needs defrosting and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS could offer Precise Fill, an option available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allow users to choose the number of cups they would like to pour out. The fridge shows a countdown to reveal how much water is left however it's not as useful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a striking piece. It's designed to look like it's a seamless part in your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also boasts a veggie compartment to keep vegetables and fruits fresher for longer, and two compressors to ensure the best food preservation. The ice maker is one of the best we've ever tested and produces a pyramid-shaped ice that is low in water usage. This fridge is the perfect choice for single household or kitchenettes looking for a built-in look and top of the line food preservation.

This fridge was the top-rated refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for several reasons. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at just a few degrees Fahrenheit, and never changing by more than a fraction a degree--this is key to avoiding freezing burn. Also, the shelves are not completely sprillproof, and can easily be stained or damaged by sharp objects. It is easy to take out the trays from the fridge however, you must clean them regularly to prevent the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the refrigerator has a standard French-door layout with gallon-sized door bins at each door, two rows of shelves that capture spills and a set sleeker drawers. The top shelf to the right can be folded in order to create more space for taller items. You'll also find a full width drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

One of the great things about this refrigerator is that the Ice maker is located in the freezer, which makes it simple to move frozen ice to the fridge to be used when it is required. The freezer also has innovative design features such as sliding drawers that allow you to organize your items. It also comes with a large bin that can hold plenty of frozen food and an additional container for storing ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can control the temperature, lighting, and more of your fridge from your smartphone. It's an easy way to monitor your refrigerator and control it, especially when away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat but it doesn't enhance the efficiency of the fridge. In fact it took longer to defrost and chill foods in this refrigerator than other refrigerators we tried. This could be due to its larger capacity.

The other issue we have with the doors of this refrigerator. The sunken handles allow shorter people to open them from the bottom. However taller people will have a hard time closing them without slamming. It would have been much better if they had handles mounted on the front.

It also comes with a huge water dispenser and a decent Ice machine that is fast.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you redirect part of the refrigerator's cooling power directly into this area, so you can store foods that require extra attention. You can adjust this feature by using the slider located on the in the middle of the drawer. You can also alter the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I've found that the general settings are more effective than the specific ones.

During my experiments, I noticed that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent in different parts of the refrigerator. The temperatures in the top, bottom and middle of the refrigerator didn't vary much from 38 degrees. This is a solid performance, but it does not quite make it to the top of our ratings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat in order to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The Frigidaire FGHB2866PF's outside is made of grey-bodied stainless steel with a "smudge-proof" finish. It repels fingerprints and streaks better than other stainless steel finishes I've seen.
